The U.S. Coast Guard Morale, Well-Being, and Recreation (MWR) Internship Program offers paid and unpaid opportunities across multiple bases, providing valuable professional experience and a chance to contribute directly to the quality of life of Coast Guard members and their families.
π About the Program
The MWR Internship Program is designed to give students real-world training in:
- Recreation and special events planning.
- Fitness and wellness program development.
- Youth and child development services.
- Hospitality and business operations (food & beverage, lodging, recreation).
- Marketing, social media, and community outreach.
Interns also participate in staff meetings, cross-functional projects, and complete a final project or presentation summarizing their experience.
π Internship Locations
Internships are available at several Coast Guard sites, including:
- Base Portsmouth, VA
- Base Kodiak, AK
- U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London, CT
- Coast Guard Yard, Baltimore, MD
- Base Borinquen, Puerto Rico
π― Key Responsibilities
As an MWR Intern, you may:
- Support the planning and delivery of recreation and community events.
- Assist with fitness, wellness, and outreach programming.
- Work with child and youth services (depending on location).
- Contribute to business operations in hospitality and lodging.
- Manage or support social media and marketing campaigns.
- Deliver excellent customer service to Coast Guard members and their families.
β Eligibility Requirements
To qualify, applicants must:
- Be a U.S. citizen or legal resident eligible to work in the U.S.
- Be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university (at least half-time).
- Be pursuing studies in Recreation, Hospitality, Fitness, Sports Management, Child & Youth Development, Marketing, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Be in good academic standing.
- Show strong communication, teamwork, and leadership skills.
- Apply at least 60 days before the internship start date.
π Note: Housing and some meals are provided at select locations.
π Internship Details
- Seasons: Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter
- Duration: Varies by site and semester
- Compensation: Paid or unpaid depending on assignment/funding
