The Department of Global Communications (DGC) promotes global awareness and understanding of the work of the United Nations. By engaging audiences worldwide through strategic communication and public outreach, DGC helps create support for the UN’s mission and goals. The department leverages traditional and digital media, public campaigns, and local partnerships to inform and inspire global communities.

Internship Overview

This internship position is based in the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Sana’a, Yemen. Interns will support the team in enhancing public awareness through digital content, media engagement, and event coordination.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support content creation for UNIC Sana’a’s online platforms, including social media.
  • Monitor and moderate social media platforms, and assist in implementing online campaigns.
  • Assist in designing, producing, and distributing informational materials.
  • Help organize public events, press briefings, and meetings.
  • Prepare weekly media monitoring reports on Yemeni and international news coverage.
  • Provide translation support for UNIC Sana’a and the Resident Coordinator’s Office in Yemen.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the internship, the intern will:

  • Gain practical experience in public information and media outreach within a UN context.
  • Develop communication and digital media skills in a multicultural, international setting.
  • Enhance understanding of UN communications strategies in conflict and post-conflict environments.
  • Strengthen language and translation abilities in Arabic and English.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (Master’s degree or equivalent, or higher).
  • Be in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s degree or equivalent).
  • Have recently completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. programme.

Note: Proof of enrollment or graduation will be required at a later stage.

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in both English and Arabic.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and digital content creation.
  • Organizational and multitasking abilities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Translation and localization skills are a plus.
  • Interest in global issues, media, and public information.

Language Requirements

  • Fluency in spoken and written English and Arabic is required.
  • Knowledge of another official UN language is an asset.

Conditions of the Internship

  • Internships are unpaid.
  • All expenses related to travel, visas, accommodation, and living costs are the responsibility of the intern or their sponsoring institution.
  • Interns are responsible for obtaining the necessary visa and work authorization.
  • Interns are not considered UN staff and may not represent the UN in any official capacity.
  • Interns may not apply for or be appointed to any professional UN position during the internship.
