Are you a motivated law student eager to gain hands-on experience in international and European human rights law? The T.M.C. Asser Instituut invites applications for a unique internship that combines academic research with practical engagement in a leading research institute based in The Hague.

About the Organisation

The T.M.C. Asser Instituut, established in 1965, is a leading research centre for international and European law. Located in The Hague, the city of peace and justice, the Institute conducts high-level academic research and organises activities at the intersection of academia, law, and policy. Its work focuses on pressing global issues, including human rights, business and human rights, international criminal law, and transnational public interests.

Background and Context of the Internship

This internship is part of the Asser research strand “Transnational public interests: Constituting public interest beyond and below the state.” Interns will gain exposure to projects focusing on international law and European human rights law while contributing to research, editorial, and event coordination activities.

  • Position: Internship in International and European Human Rights Law
  • Start Date: 17 November 2025
  • Period: Six months (with possible extension to nine months)
  • Commitment: Full-time (38 hours per week; study commitments taken into account)
  • Location: The Hague, The Netherlands (in-person, not remote)
  • Stipend: €550 per month

Duties and Responsibilities

Interns will divide their time equally between two programmes, supervised by Dr. Stephanie Triefus and Dr. Antoine Duval:

  • Human Rights Here blog (NNHRR):
    • Edit and contribute blog posts.
    • Correspond with authors and editors.
    • Manage publication on the HRH website.
    • Promote dissemination of blog posts via social media.
  • Doing Business Right project:
    • Provide ad hoc research assistance, especially in business and human rights.
    • Draft and edit bibliographies, case notes, blogs, and summaries.
    • Assist with logistics of (online) events and draft event reports.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants should:

  • Be enrolled as a student in international or European law, or be a recent graduate (within one year).
  • Demonstrate strong interest in international and/or European human rights law, particularly business and human rights.
  • Have excellent English writing and editing skills.
  • Be proficient with computers (experience managing websites/social media is an advantage).
  • Be motivated, organised, and able to work both independently and in a team.

⚠️ Important:

  • Internships are for students only. You must be registered as a student at a university or school.
  • Applicants must be eligible to live and work in the Netherlands (through EU citizenship or a student visa from a Dutch university).
  • Recent graduates (bachelor or master) may apply, but only within one year after graduation.
  • The Asser Institute cannot hire non-EU students without Dutch residency and a work permit.
