Background and Context of the Internship
The Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa (CoM SSA) is the regional chapter of the Global Covenant of Mayors, the world’s largest alliance of cities committed to ambitious climate action. In its current implementation phase (Phase IV), GIZ is scaling up CoM SSA’s impact by enhancing access to finance for climate-resilient urban infrastructure. This includes technical assistance in project preparation, advisory services for financing, and support for inclusive and participatory climate planning.
As an intern, you will join the Brussels-based Coordination Unit, contributing to knowledge generation and analytical work that advances these objectives.
Duties and Responsibilities
As an intern, your tasks will include:
- Conducting research and preparing analytical briefs on urban climate finance and infrastructure.
- Mapping and summarising available funding mechanisms (e.g., grants, concessional loans, blended finance).
- Reviewing and categorising urban infrastructure projects supported by CoM SSA, with a focus on financing readiness.
- Supporting the preparation of meetings, materials, talking points, and presentations.
- Assisting in communication, documentation, and organisation of events.
- Acting as a focal point for exchange with interns in implementing countries, including MS Teams management.
- Performing additional tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
Requirements/Eligibility Criteria
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated (Master’s preferred, completed no more than six months prior) in International Development, International Relations, Urban Development, Communications, or related fields.
- Strong writing, research, and analytical skills.
- Interest in developing project management and stakeholder coordination skills.
- Excellent command of MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Initial experience in development cooperation and/or private sector is an advantage.
- Strong interest in climate change and sustainable development.
- High level of responsiveness, self-organisation, and intercultural sensitivity.
- Full professional proficiency in English; knowledge of German or French is an asset.
- Must hold a valid Belgian work permit (non-EU candidates must provide proof when applying).
⚠️ Note: GIZ will not cover or apply for work permits for internships.
