Internship Overview
The Investigations Section of UNDP’s Office of Audit and Investigations (OAI) is seeking to recruit three Data Science Interns for its Global Fund Investigations Unit. The internship will last six months starting around 1 June 2025 and will be based at UNDP Headquarters in New York, with the possibility of remote work.
Interns will support the development and implementation of innovative, data-driven tools and prototypes to enhance the efficiency and impact of fraud detection, internal audits, and investigative analysis.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in evaluating the applicability of data analytics, AI, ML, and automation for fraud investigations.
- Contribute to the design and development of prototype tools to improve investigative workflows.
- Enhance existing tools to integrate better into ongoing investigations.
- Support the adoption of data-driven solutions to boost investigation efficiency and accuracy.
- Document findings, prototype features, and use cases for internal knowledge sharing.

- Gain hands-on experience with AI and machine learning in a real-world investigative context.
- Understand the structure and functioning of an internal audit and investigations unit within a UN agency.
- Learn how technology can be leveraged in international development, compliance, and fraud prevention.

Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria at the time of application:
- Be enrolled in a postgraduate degree program (e.g., Master’s or higher) in Data Science, Computer Science, Finance, or related applied sciences.
- Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (Bachelor’s level or equivalent).
- Have recently graduated from a university program and start the internship within one year of graduation.
- Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program relevant to the role.
Required Skills and Competencies
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Experience with AI or ML technologies for cognitive analysis and automation.
- Working knowledge of Python, R, and SQL.
- Familiarity with concepts in fraud investigation and internal audit is an asset.
- Demonstrated integrity, objectivity, cultural sensitivity, and clear communication skills.
- Ability to multitask and produce timely, high-quality outputs.
Language Requirements
- Fluency in English (spoken and written) is required.
- Fluency in French, Russian, Arabic, or Spanish is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of additional UN official languages is an advantage.
Conditions of the Internship
- Internship location: UNDP Headquarters, New York (potential for remote/home-based work).
- Interns must use their own laptop if working remotely.
- The internship is full-time.
- The top three candidates will be selected for internships beginning 1 June 2025.
